After the Suns beat the Lions by 66 points in late July of 2025, I felt absolutely sure the Brisbane Lions had messed up their chances of winning back-to-back premierships. Premiership teams just don't lose like that so late in the season. Right?

I was so sure of this (and so sad about it) that I made a bet. A very dumb bet. I've podcasted with Mike Whiting for over a decade now, and have always been amused by his love of running. I have particularly been amused by his comment that running marathons is addictive. Cheese is addictive. Chocolate is addictive. Not running 42.2km. So the bet was made: if the Lions somehow turn things around to win the 2025 Premiership, I – a 32-year old man who had never run 200 metres before – would run a marathon. The final siren of the 2025 Grand Final brought with it an unusual mix of great joy and deep despair. The six months since have brought constant pain. But here we are. The longest victory lap in history is just about to take place.
